| As with most brass bands Christmas proves to be
one of the most busy periods in our calendar with many Christmas concerts
and carolling jobs. The band performed to audiences around the local area
including Bury Golf Club and Wingates Church. The band entertained their
audiences with Christmas favourites such as The Christmas Song, Christmas
Triptych and March: Christmas Praise. Along with this there was
also the addition of fine soloists this year in the form of Principal Cornet
Claire Mumford playing Peter Graham's Away In A Manger and Solo
Euphonium Sean Hayes playing the traditional favourite O Holy Night.
All concerts were well received and helped put many into the Christmas
spirit. Also this year saw the bands training band performing at a new venue
for them, the Xvarian College in Manchester, here the band played three
arrangements form MD Jon Taylor. The band performed Royal Appointment,
Coventry Carol and Jingle Bell Rock all it must be said fine
arrangements of traditional favourites. This was a great experience for the
band and their MD and the performance was superbly received and the band
will surely go from strength to strength after this experience. The final opportunity for both the band and training band to showcase their talents came in the form of our annual Christmas concert this year to be held at Prestwich Conservative Club. Unfortunately due to several inches of snow falling on the morning of the concert the decision was made in the interest of safety to cancel the concert. Finally the Christmas season was rounded off with carolling jobs at Tesco (Prestwich), Sainsburys (Heaton Park), and Slatterys (Whitefield) which are always a great opportunity for the band to play in the local community reaching audiences that might not be a traditional brass band audience. The band are now partaking in a well earned festive break before the work starts again to make 2010 another great year for Besses Boys Band. With that in mind may we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2010 from everyone involved with Besses Boys Band. |

| The band were once again out on the contest
platform with the final contest of the year taking place in St. Helens, The
Wilkinson Open Championships. The were pitted against a strong field of 9
but with two withdrawals that left 6 others to compete against. The day
began with the usual prep with a rehearsal at the bandroom before travelling
down the M62 to St. Helens. The band were drawn to play last in the section
so had the somewhat uncommon task of waiting until the previous 6 bands had
played. Not liking to have a smooth running day the bands preparation were
somewhat panicked by the fact that as they went into registration only one
of the four strong bass team were there! As MD James Holt was left pacing
finally the players turned up and the band was ready to take the stage. In
another unfortunate mishap for the day the 2nd Adjudicators copy of the
score had been "mislaid" at the bandroom and so this meant the band were
taking to the stage minus the conductors score. With everyone on edge of
their seat the bands performance of Dark Side of the Moon began.
There were some fine solo contributions on the day from each of the many
soloists featured within the band with Principal Cornet Claire Mumford, Solo
Horn Alana Evans and our strong percussion team receiving special mention
from the days adjudicator Paul Andrews. Come the results the band were in
the auditorium and were duly rewarded with the runners up spot behind Darwen
Brass. After the announcement of the results BBB.com caught up with MD James
Holt who had the following to say on the days events "After a somewhat shaky start to the day the band once again showed their quality when it came to the crunch. I was able to hear Darwen's performance from back stage and they sounded very impressive indeed so there is certainly no shame in coming 2nd. The thing that pleases me most is the consistency were are starting to achieve in terms of performance when it comes to the moment, being on stage with the pressure on. Everyone has done remarkably well and we are all itching to get back on the contest stage to try and claw our way just one further spot up the rankings. The band are now into preparation for the busy Xmas period before the contesting time is back again in early 2010. BBB.com will follow the band through this time and will keep all fans of the band updated on the website. Congratulation to the band for another successful day and on behalf of everyone associated with Besses Boys Band can we say a big congratulations to everyone at Darwen Brass. |

Once again the band have been out with large crowds to pay our respects on the day of remembrance. The day started as usual from the British Legion Prestwich marching to the local senetaf. Here the band performed a selection of hymns before principal cornet Claire Mumford performed the last post and Revalle with a final performance of the national anthem from the band. Following this the band led the parade back to the legion for refreshments. The band are extremely honoured to be able to participate in this most special of days and have been booked to appear next year. |

|
| The band have today returned from the weekend
trip to Pontins holiday resort, Prestatyn. The band were again competing in
the fourth section performing A Bournemouth Suite, by up and coming
composer Benjamin Tubb. The band had the unusual luxury of a late draw
meaning that everyone got an unusual ly-in on a contest day! The band gave a
solid performance of this tricky piece that had many on-lookers believing
they had a chance of finding themselves in the prizes, though on this
occasion the adjudicators disagreed resulting with 6th place the result.
After the performance BBB.com spoke to MD James Holt who had the following
to say: Today we have performed really well. During my tenure with the band we've had a bit of a jinx with our performances at this contest and it feels great that this has been broken. The band did absolutely everything I asked of them today and much more, they performed superbly and I appreciate their efforts. Regardless of the result the band have done themselves proud and we have made many friends and that's a great step for this band and I am so happy for them to have given their all. They make me extremely proud to be able to stand in front of them as their musical director. The band are already looking forward to their next contest in 3 weeks time competing at the Wilkinson's contest St. Helens and BBB.com will be there to follow their performance. |

|
| It is with sadness that the band announces the departures of solo trombone Christian Sharples and back row cornet player Emma Kilpatrick. Christian has been with the band for several years progressing through the ranks of both the training band and main band eventually taking on the role of solo trombone. Emma has been with the band for just over 3 years now and in that time has become one of the components of our strong back row team. Both Christian and Emma have been great servants to the band and everyone associated with Besses Boys wishes them both the best in all that they do in the future. |

| This weekend saw the band returning to the Marina Hall, Fleetwood, in an attempt to retain their fourth section crown won last year on their debut performance. The band had drawn number 1 meaning the traditional early start was inevitable, a 7am rehearsal at the bandroom before travelling across to Fleetwood. The band chose once again to perform Paul Lovatt-Coopers' The Dark Side of the Moon and again put in a great performance. This time 2nd place was the result with the winners the bands local rivals, Darwen Brass. Adjudicator, Capt. Paul Norley, praised the bands performance stating the style of the music was just right with fine soloists. There was also special mention to our bass section and our "Sympathetic" glockenspiel player Leah Fogo! The band have started the contest season in fine style and now move onto the Pontins contest in two weeks time. |
|
|
| The Band are pleased to
announce the signing of two new players to our ranks ahead of our defence of
the Fleetwood 4th section this weekend. Tom Leach and Charlotte Unwind
complete our back row line, both players have settled in well and have fast
made an improvement to an already strong section. Another new signing to the
band is the addition of Leah Fogo, girlfriend of principal percussionist Jon
Taylor, to our percussion section. The band are also pleased to welcome back
Rebecca Hurst to the seat of solo baritone and welcome Christian Sharples
promotion to solo trombone following Adam Hirst leaving the band as he
relocates to Leeds University to study music. Speaking of these movements
within the band MD James Holt had to following to say: Charlotte and Tom are new members to the band who have really boosted our back row sound and will surely prove to be vital assets to the band over the coming years. Leah is another new face to the band who has made a sudden impact aiding to the strength of what already was a fine section. It is great to welcome back Becca to the ranks of the band, she was sorely missed when she moved to university but due to a change in circumstances Becca finds herself able to return to the band whilst continuing her studies which is fantastic. Adam Hirst has been a great servant to the band, progressing through our training band and into the main band eventually working his way to solo trombone where he has been a tremendous section leader he will be sorely missed and everyone at the band wishes him well. Luckily we have been living in luxury over recent months as we have had a trombone section of four players meaning we have a ready made replacement in Christian Sharples. Christian has shown great maturity with his new role and I am sure he will continue this impressive start. BBB.com would like to welcome all our new players to the band and wish them a happy and successful tenure with the band. |

| Tonight Boys Band competed in their first full
concert of the new 'season'. Every year the band play for the Whit Walking
day for St. Paul's Peel Church in Little Hulton and this was the first time
the audience here got to see the band in "all their glory". The band were
asked to include some film and show music as well as music from the popular
film
Brassed Off. After some stage problems on arrival the scene was set,
with the audience ready for the nights entertainment and they were not to be
disappointed. The band kicked off in usual fashion with Fucik's
Florentine March featured within Brassed Off and it was clear the
band meant business. From first note to last the band played with aplomb
with some fine bass end and percussion work on show. Following this the band
moved on the music from the popular music Mary Poppins, this was a
new piece for the band and one that the audience clearly enjoyed from the
singing along the took part during the music. Then cam the first soloist of
the bands programme for the evening with music of Freddie Mercury, Love
of my Life, featuring solo Euphonium Sean Hayes. This was the first time
Sean has done a stand up solo and it was well worth the wait with Sean
displayed beautiful understanding and control of his instrument playing this
music subtle of pieces. The band had been treated to the audience singing to
their music and now it was time for the audience to dance! Singin' In The
Rain made famous by the wonderful Gene Kelly is always a popular piece
with band and audiences alike and this day was no different. Next up was a
feature for our solo cornet bench teaming up to play a feature from our
latest release Aces High, 12th St. Rag. The ability of the band to be
able to play comfortably in so many different styles was clear with this
ragtime number and our soloists efforts were clearly appreciated. The
penultimate offering for the first half came in the subtly beautiful
Londonderry Air. Featured this time was our newly appointed solo horn
player Alana Evans who demonstrated a calmness and beautiful tone in
mesmerising the audience with this most famous of tunes. The band finished
off the first half in fine style with theme music from the animated classic
The Incredibles. This is a fantastic piece and one the band really
sank their teeth into and were able to cope with the challenges this piece
has to offer. Special mention must go to repiano player Adam Galloway who
played his solo within this piece for the first time superbly. With the
audience clearly pleased with the entertainment on offer it was time for the
interval, a chance for both players and audience to sample the hot supper
and drinks on offer as well as buy some raffle tickets in preparation for
the second half. The band began their second stint of the concert with a new piece to their repertoire the wonderful arrangement, by Black Dyke Solo Horn player Sandy Smith, of Valero. Then came another solo offering, again from Brassed Off, possibly the most famous piece from the film the Flugel solo Concerto De Aranjuez from Rodrigo's guitar concerto. Flugel player Eleanor Parkes kept up the high standard that had been set my her peers previously in the concert and the audience responded with a rapturous round of applause following her performance. The music that followed this was another opportunity for the audience to use their vocal chords in the always popular Black and White Minstrels selection number one. The final solo contribution of the evening came from our percussion section with Principal percussion Jon Taylor on Xylophone and Vibraphone and Leah Fogo taking the lead on the triangle in an adaptation of the violin czardas entitled Flying Mallets. It was with this piece the audience were treated to a master class of musicality and technique from our percussion section that will surely last long in the mind. The penultimate item of the concert was in the simply beautiful A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square. The band displayed excellent control of sound to set the tone for some excellent work from principal Cornetist Claire Mumford. It was at this point in proceedings that the band were given a rest before their finale whilst there was a draw for the raffle, an auction, and a stirring round of applause for the band. With their final offering the band decided to go our on a limb and finish in style with the huge test set by composer Paul Lovatt-Cooper with his popular composition The Dark Side of the Moon. The band took a risk and paid dividends with the performance the followed, the contrast in dynamic and a colour provided the suitable eerie feeling to the opening of the music before the technical demands of the driving section that follows were played with aplomb. Special mention must be made to soloists that performed including newly appointed Solo Trombone Christian Sharples settling to his new seat well. The bass end performed with style in the "feature section" before the band showed their stamina to finish off the piece in style. After several standing ovations the band did not fail to disappoint playing what has become something of a traditional encore with the piece Aces High. Speaking to Musical Director James Holt after the concert BBB.com got the following comments "The band have performed superbly this evening, at the end of any concert, and I'm sure in your review, you can name players who have stood out well tonight I would have to list everyone. Every single player on that stage played their part and the result was the great music that followed particularly in our difficult finale. It was great to be able to perform this concert tonight St.Pauls has always been a very welcoming venue for us when we come for the Whit Walks and it was nice for them to see another string to our bow so to speak and I hope this is not the first and last concert we do for them. Moving forward from this the band must now use this week to prepare for the upcoming defence of our title won at the Fleetwood contest last year so we can do our very best to retain this crown. Of course BBB.com will be following the band in their preparations and on the day of our contest and updates will be posted both on the website and on our twitter site throughout the day. |

| Boys band today began their new season in the familiar surroundings of the Horticultural centre of Heaton Park. In what has become a regular opener for the band they played to an audience for the friends of Heaton Park Society. Playing three separate spots the band entertained the crowds with favourites like Instant Concert, Troublemaker and selections of music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The band were able to remain dry throughout the day and also had time to enjoy some of the wonderful home made cakes on offer. The band are now well into preparations for upcoming concerts and contests details of which can be found on out events page. |

| Saturday 20th June saw the band ending the
season with a performance at the prestigious Bury Parish Church. There was a
packed out audience to listen to the performance and the band did not
disappoint. The performance began with the march recently used by the band
for the Whit Friday performances Castell Coch by T.J. Powell.
Following these came music from the pen of Gounod and his chorus 'Mors et
Vita' with Denis Wright's arrangement of Judex. Then came the
first soloist of the evening in the form of the band's principal cornet
player Claire Mumford who showcased her beautiful tone in the well know
salvation army solo Share My Yoke. Claire was then joined by her
front row compatriots Scott Broadhurst and Bradley Hirst to show technical
prowess in the much loved Buglers Holiday. The music then turned
north with music from Scotland and then pen of Peter Graham in his musical
tribute to Scotland's first son Robert Burns with his wonderful music
Alloway Tales featuring some excellent percussion work and fine
euphonium playing from Rebecca Hurst. The mood was then relaxed with music
from Leonard Ballatine and he beautiful tune Shenendoah set to the
words Mid All The Traffic. The first half was rounded off in style
with the Elvis Tribute arranged by Goff Richards An American Trilogy.
Following the traditional break for refreshments the band were back on stage and opened the second half with a new piece to their repertoire. Music once again from the pen of Peter Graham in a piece originally written for the Cory Band, featuring some excellent fanfare like work from our cornet and trombone sections. Following this came a double feature for the band's Flugel player Eleanor Parkes. Firstly in possibly the most famous of all Flugel Solo's Rodrigo's Concerto De Aranjuez played with beautiful tone quality. Following this came another new piece for the band arranged by Espen Westbye, soprano player with one of Norway's finest bands, Stavanger, from the film mission impossible - Injection. The final solo contribution of the evening came in the form of a euphonium duet from Becca Hurst and Callum Baxter. The duo played the well known Perhaps Love, special mention must go to the duo playing together for the first time after the band's solo euphonium player Sean Hayes was unfortunately taken ill shortly before the concert, Becca stepped in and performed a challenging nights concert with no rehearsal and with the help of Callum produced a fine display. The penultimate item of the evening was taken from the popular film Saving Private Ryan with music originally written by the infamous John Williams in an arrangement by Klass Van Der Woude, the chillingly beautiful Hymn to the Fallen. It is often said that you should save the best till last and this was certainly the case for this evening entertainment. MD James Holt explained to the audience that in a break from tradition the band would be ending the concert with a test piece, a risky idea but one that certainly paid off. Paul Lovatt Cooper's The Dark side of the Moon has been used recently by the band as their own choice piece at recent contests. This is a piece that has been received well by audiences all over the world and has been performed by some of the worlds best bands. This evening was not a disappointment, the mood was set with some fine percussion work, contributions form all the bands soloists and some excellent bass playing rounded off an excellent performance that was duly appreciated by the audience. The band were asked for an encore and did not disappoint playing what has become somewhat of a signature tune - Aces High. The evening was a roaring success and following the performance BBB.com were able to catch up with MD James Holt, who had the following to say; There was some pressure on the band tonight, this was truly a fantastic venue to perform at and as far as I'm aware a first for the band and certainly for myself. The band performed better than I could of ever expected and I am truly proud of them. I hope this is the start of a long successful relationship with Bury Parish Church, we have been made to feel very welcome and have loved performing in such a fantastic, local venue. |

| This Friday 5th June saw the band once again
descend to Tameside for the annual Whit Friday March Competitions.
Performing T.J. Powell's Castell Coch the band competed at - Denton,
Audenshaw, Droylsden, Broadoak, Hurst Village, Stalybridge and Dukinfield. Despite a late start due to members of the band having exams 7 contests was a great return from the days events where the weather threatened to dampen everyone's spirits. A great time was has by all and the band was lucky enough to obtain the highest placed 4th section band at the Dukinfield contest beating many bands graded higher than fourth section in the process. On the coach trip home BBB.com caught up with MD James Holt who had the following take on the days events: It's been a great day, yes the weather has been disappointing but the band have not let that get to them. The thing I love about Whit Friday is it is an opportunity for the band to socialise together and that can only help build a strong team. Everyone was chatting to everyone else having a laugh and a joke, there was songs on the bus, and whether we get a pot today or not is irrelevant, we've been able to give some great performances and the band can be very pleased of what has been achieved today both musically and socially. They're already starting to plan for next year!!! |

The band took part in the usual march to a residential home to perform a hymn for the crowds before descending upon Dukinfield town hall with other bands, all of whom started at different churches before once again marching off back to the church for the usual tea and cakes. Boys Band showed their stamina come the end of the day completing a 5.6 mile round trip before going back to rehearse for the upcoming Whit Friday march contests. Thank you to all who took part in the days events especially the vicar at the church for his dancing during performances on the march of Amarillo!!! |

| This bank holiday Monday saw the band making the trip to Irwell Vale to take part in the annual wartime weekend remembrance festivities. Sharing their performance with a local singing performer, boys band entertained the audiences with items such as Aces High, Buglers Holiday and Hymn to the fallen. This was followed by the rousing end of a last night of the proms finale which showcased some excellent audience participation. The band look forward to future opportunities to take part in this wonderful event. |

| Today boys band were once again entertaining the masses on Kersal Moor for the friends of Kersal Moor. The afternoon began with a short march before the band gave a concert to the audiences performing old classics such as Sweet Gingerbread Man and Judex. The afternoon was a great success and the band even had time to put both Band Sgt Scott Broadhurst and MD James Holt on a sponge soaking game and both were sufficiently drenched before the second half. Photo's from the days event will be available soon on our Gallery. |

| On the morning of Sunday 3rd May the band were
once again back on the contest stage performing at the Pavilion Gardens,
Buxton. The day began in traditional style with the early morning bandroom
rehearsal before moving onto Buxton on the band coach. Press Secretary
Hannah Whitfield was found attached to her laptop throughout the day posting
regular updates on the bands twitter site. The band drew last on for
the fourth section band number 13 and were once again taking to the stage
with Paul Lovatt-Coopers The Dark Side of the Moon. The band was
again gave a great account of themselves and performed with aplomb though
unfortunately on this occasion were placed 5th by adjudicator Brett Baker.
Speaking to BBB.com MD James Holt had the following to say: Although several members of the band were disappointed with the outcome from today's performance they must look at the bigger picture. We have once again played a very challenging test piece extremely well and have maintained steady progress and been in and around come the mix at the end of the day. We can take pride from what we have achieved out of today's contest and this all adds to the experience these young people are forever gaining. We now look forward to 2 march contests and then aim for a good flourish to the end of the contesting season with Fleetwood, Pontins and Wilkinson contest all to fight for. A final well done for everyone at the band and BBB.com to eventual winners the Hazel Grove Band and to our friends at both Middleton and VBS Poynton who gained third and second in the second and top section respectively. Photographs from the days events will be available within our gallery shortly. |

| On the evening of Saturday 25th April the band were out performing once again, this time giving a Last Night of the Proms concert at the Middleton Masonic Lodge. The band were booked to play to the audience during their meal and a great night was had by all. The committee were able to sit in the side bar and enjoy their own festivities at the same time. A great night was had by all with the audience becoming fully engaged and even having a solo male singer for Jerusalem. The band were also able to sell a gross of CD's and there is talk of us being booked for future events. Thanks to Middleton Lodge for booking us for the event and we look forward to a long and successful partnership of event with them. |

| Besses Boys are delighted
to be able to announce the signing of Claire Mumford to the position of
Principal Cornet. Claire joins the band after the sad demise of her previous
band Stockport Brass (formerly the BT Band) where she played Flugel Horn.
Claire, Fiancé of MD James Holt, made her debut with the band at the area
contest and following that played in the performance that gained 2nd place
at the Tameside contest. MD James Holt had the following to say of the
appointment: "Claire brings with her a wealth of experience of championship section banding having played for both BT and the Sovereign band at contests such as The National Finals at the Royal Albert Hall, London, The English Nationals and The Grand Shield. I hope the band take this great opportunity to learn from such experience and this can only improve us as a unit" Claire's first concert on Principal Cornet will be at the band's next outing at Middleton Masonic Lodge on 25th April, all at BBB.com welcome Claire to the band. |

| Besses Boys stormed to a
well-deserved second place at Dukinfield Town Hall on Sunday with a
fantastic performance of Paul Lovatt-Cooper's Dark Side of the Moon. They
gained 188 points and came just behind Formby, who are a nationally-graded
3rd Section Band. The audience sat stunned as the band gave a great
performance and, before the piece had even finished, several people were on
their feet cheering. The band were 'over the moon' with the performance and
Musical Director James Holt said: "Having a busy concert and contest schedule I was amazed that we were able to get this great piece ready and play it so well, we have again raised the bar and set ourselves a new standard to aim for" All this despite the recent departure of some key players, who have moved on to play with different bands. Besses Boys continue to move from strength to strength and already have their eyes on fighting for a prize in a few weeks time at Buxton Contest. |

| With the memories of the Area 2008 still fresh
in the our minds it was all of a sudden time again for the traditional early
morning rehearsal on the day of the North West Area contest held in
Blackpool. The band met as usual at the bandroom for their pre contest
rehearsal at 7am in the morning, which still allowed time for the
traditional morning McDonalds breakfast! After a solid rehearsal to warm up
at the bandroom the band were fast on their way to Blackpool and awaiting
the draw, in what appears to fast becoming a tradition the band drew the
unlucky draw of Band number 1, so whilst some members of the band were still
parking up the rush began to get backstage and get registered. The band took
the stage of the Opera House at 10am and played the traditional National
anthem before embarking on setting the bar on this years challenging test
piece, The Talisman for brass band. Although the performance didn't find
favour in the box the band set about their task well and set a good marker
for the days events with excellent solo contributions from Claire Mumford,
Eleanor Parkes, and Sean Hayes (Principal cornet, Flugel and solo Euphonium)
speaking to BBB.com after the performance MD James Holt had the following to
say: Once again we've come to the area and got an early draw, the band have made me an incredibly proud man today. The performance off a number one draw was excellent. The preparation the band put in has been little short of astonishing and they can be assured in the knowledge they have done their parents, the band, myself and most importantly themselves proud and the is all of the plan of improvement. Things will not change overnight but we are most certainly moving in the right direction. We must say a big thank you to the many people who congratulated us on our performance, some we knew some we didn't, your kind words are very much appreciated. In addition we must offer our congratulations to the three bands who have qualified for the nationals today and wish them all the best when the represent the North West in Harrogate later this year. Brass band website 4barsret.com had the following to say on the performance; Besses Boys (and girls of course) opened the contest with some cracking playing, only to fall away as their youthful enthusiasm was undone by a lack of stamina. There was some fine playing from the young girls on solo cornet and Flugel though. You can see the Band next on the contest stage at the Tameside Open Contest at the end of this month, BBB.com wishes the band all the very best for this contest and beyond. |

| This weekend Besses Boys enjoyed their annual
solo contest, where each member of both the main and training bands are
expected to play an unaccompanied solo for this years adjudicator, formal
Faireys Flugel Horn Player, Neil Hewson. The day began with a strong
Training band section consisting of a five strong field of the talent that
Besses Boys are nurturing with hopes of one day entering the main band. On
the day it was a one two for brother and sister Jacob and Alice Saunders
with big brother Jacob taking the top prize with a confident performance.
Following this section came the Preliminary section where is was 3rd Cornet,
Paul Mitchell, who showed maturity far beyond his years to give a reassured
performance on Somewhere from West Side story. The day was hotting up nicely
and the talent on show was clear for all to see and this continued in what
was probably the hardest section to adjudicate on the day, the intermediate
section. Neil Hewson decided on this occasion to give the prize to 2nd
trombone player Christian Sharples who gave a fine performance of Summertime
to take the title. The final individual section of the day, the advanced
section, saw Training Band MD, and principal percussionist for the main
band, Jon Taylor give a master class performing the famous Czardas, after
the section adjudicator Neil spoke of Jon's musicality and control over his
chosen piece that won him the section. The final section of the day saw an
open ensemble section open to any group of two or more players, on the day
it was main band 3rd Cornet section members Paul Mitchell and Catherine Fox
who impressed the adjudicator with their performance of the Entertainer
enough to take the title. Before the results the competitors and audience
were able to hear the words of adjudicator Neil Hewson and his thoughts for
the day. He commented what a great day he had enjoyed and the stand out for
him was the sound each competitor he produced, commenting he didn't remember
on remarks sheet where he didn't remark on the quality of sound produced by
these young musicians. Following a comfort break for food and the start of the nights party (Certainly a favourite part of the day for the band and especially committee!!!) it was time to offer the yearly "special" awards. Firstly came the Training band Most Improved player award, MD Jon Taylor had chosen to give this to Cornetist Peter Brown. Then came the first of the main band awards, a favourite for MD James Holt as he didn't have to choose it, the attendance award which this year was split between Eleanor Parkes and Paul Mitchell. Then came the award for the boys bands most promising new recruit open to any member who has joined since the last solo contest, this year saw the award go to 3rd Cornet Catherine Fox who added the award to her previous first place in the ensemble section. It was certainly a busy day for a back row cornet section as Paul Mitchell added to his tally of the day so far consisting of winning the preliminary section, ensemble section and attendance award when he took his 4th award of the night was he was named the bands most improved player!! The next award on offer was the services to the band award, an award that went to "bumper up" and Band Sgt Scott Broadhurst, a choice that certainly went down with players and audience alike. The penultimate award of the day was for the Band's Bandsperson of the year, always a closely contested affair, this year the band choice went to Eb Bass player Hannah Whitfield seen as the 'mother of the band' Hannah was a well liked winner indeed. Finally came the choice of MD James Holt's Bandsperson of the year, he spoke of the difficulty he had in choosing the winner of this award commenting that everyone in the band was a good Bandsperson, though there can only be one winner, this year this went to Eleanor Parkes who had shown great commitment over the last 12 months stepping in on principal cornet on several occasions before changing onto the Flugel Horn chair with great success. The party went on into the small hours and a great day and night was had by all. Congratulations to everyone who took part in this day, one of the most important in the boys band calendar. |

| It is with great sadness that Besses Boys Band
announce the departure of principal cornet Kirsten Broadhurst. Kirsten has
been with the band for over 5 years occupying the principal cornet seat for
the last 4 of these. The band wishes her all the best as she heads to the
dizzy heights of the championship section to take up the position of Flugel
Horn with the Timperley Band. Commenting on the loss, MD James Holt, had the
following to say; Kirsten has been a wonderful servant to the band over the last five years, she has been one of the most consistent performers we have had as a soloist on both the concert and contest stage. She is a well liked member of the band and will be sorely missed. She has given the band fantastic service and we cannot begrudge this fantastic move for her to the championship section. I am sure Kirsten will be a regular visitor to the boys band at both rehearsals and performances and she will always be will welcome as a lifelong friend of the band. This means the band has now got a vacancy for principal cornet, anyone interested can visit our Vacancies page.
